On Thursday, April 22nd, UFCW Local 152 Union Representative Hugh Giordano attended a Lacey Township Committee meeting where the Committee introduced an ordinance to completely ban the recreational sale of marijuana. As he has done countless times, Hugh spoke in defense of the cannabis industry and was later reported by the Patch:
“During the meeting Thursday, representative Hugh Giordano of the United Food & Commercial Workers Union said cannabis businesses could give the community more jobs that offer competitive wages and health benefits.
‘We don’t demonize our alcohol delivery drivers. We don’t demonize our pharmacists. We should not demonize these jobs. They are good people. They’re educated people, they’re union members and they live in this community,’ he said.”

The April 22nd meeting sparked controversy with many local residents who are adamantly against the cannabis ban, and so far over 500 residents have signed a petition on Change.org.
The next Committee meeting will take place on Thursday, May 13th, where the public will have the opportunity to comment and a vote will take place.
