Announcing the Winners of the 2018 Irv R. String Local 152 Scholarship Fund

Scholarship Dinner 2018

Earlier this year, the 2018 Irv R. String Local 152 Scholarship Fund opened for members and their dependents to apply for college scholarships. After careful deliberation by the Scholarship Committee, we have selected our award winners, below.

 

2018 Scholarship Winner, Connor Devosa

CONNOR DEVOSA

Connor is a senior at Howell High School and is planning to attend Rutgers University where he will major in Business/Economics. Connor has participated at the Relay for Life at Howell High School and in community clean-ups. He is also part of the concert band and jazz band. His father, Stephen Devosa, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Saker ShopRite.

 


Scholarship winner Kayla Devosa

KAYLA DEVOSA

Kayla is a senior at Howell High School and is planning to attend the College of New Jersey where she will be majoring in Pre-Engineering Technology Education. Kayla has volunteered at her church, Saint William the Abbot, where she worked in several areas including children’s choir, in the school religion office as an office assistant and substitute teacher and as a counselor in the Vacation Bible School in the summer. She has also participated in track, Key Club, The Technology Student Association, National Honor Society and the National Technology Honors Society. Her father, Stephen Devosa, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Saker ShopRite.

 


Scholarship winner, Catherine Faust

CATHERINE FAUST

Catherine is a senior at Ocean City High School and is planning to attend Rowan University where she plans to study Athletic Training in their 5 year Master’s program. Catherine has volunteered at different marathons and also mentors freshman students at her school. She has also participated in cross country, softball, Athletic Training Club and Open Gym Club. She has received a varsity letter in softball and cross country and distinguished honors. Her mother, Abigayle Faust, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Acme Markets.

 


Scholarship winner, Nicholas KlaptachNICHOLAS KLAPTACH

Nicholas is a senior at Cedar Creek High School and is planning to attend Stockton University where he will be majoring in Computer Science and minor in Mathematics. Nicholas has volunteered at Assumption Church in Galloway, NJ as an altar server.  He has also participated on the Academic Team, New Jersey Consumer Bowl Team and was Vice President of the Math Club. He has received the award for Distinguished Varsity Scholar and World Language Honor Society. Nicholas is a member of UFCW Local 152 at Village ShopRite in Galloway, New Jersey.

 


Scholarship winner, Marybeth McNameeMARYBETH MCNAMEE

Marybeth is currently attending Temple University where she is majoring in Neuroscience. She plans on becoming a neurologist and dreams of working with athletes with concussions and other long-term brain injuries. Marybeth has volunteered with various beach clean ups, blood drives and at the local food bank. In high school, she tutored students in English whose parents were first generation immigrants and was part of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Academic Team and Jazz Band. At Temple, she is part of the Main Campus Production Board and Temple Consulting Club. Her father, Daniel McNamee, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Acme Markets.

 


Scholarship winner, Leslie MorrisLESLIE MORRIS

Leslie is a senior at Ewing High School and is planning to attend James Madison University where she will major in Business. Leslie has volunteered at the local library where she helps children in Kindergarten through 5th grade with their homework, at various charity walks, environmental cleanups and childcare for parental school functions. She has also participated in the Key Club, Environmental Club and has earned a varsity letter each year for her academic achievements. Her mother, Medora Morris, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office.

 


Scholarship winner, Mitchell RemondiMITCHELL REMONDI

Mitchell is a senior at Dover high School and is planning to attend University of Delaware where he will major in Nutrition. He plans on becoming a registered Dietician. Mitchell has volunteered for the Senior Olympics, trash pick-ups and Christmas events for kids at the local mall. He has also raised money for Teenvision Club and has contributed to charitable events at the YMCA of Delaware. He has also participated on the boys’ tennis team, cross country, Speech and Debate Club, She’s the First, DHS Teenvision, Science Olympiad and the National Honor Society. His father, James Remondi, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Kraft Foods in Dover, Delaware.

 


Scholarship winner, Elena St. AmourELENA ST. AMOUR

Elena is a senior at Cedar Creek High School and is planning to attend Drew University where she will major in Neuroscience. She plans on becoming a neurologist and being involved in research for either neuroscience or psychology. Elena has volunteered at ARC of Atlantic County in their thrift store and their after-school program and at the Atlantic County 4H Fair and the Community Food Bank. She has also participated in the National Honor Society, FBLA, Math Club, Science Club and the Science League. Elena is a member of UFCW Local 152 at Incollingo’s Family Markets in Egg Harbor City, NJ.
