Workers at Genesis HealthCare Choose UFCW Local 152 for Union Representation

Workers from Genesis Healthcare in Millville, NJ celebrate their union victory with union organizers.

Workers at Genesis HealthCare, an assisted living facility in Millville, NJ have voted to select UFCW Local 152 as their voice on the job!

The vote to designate Local 152 as their representative in contract negotiations with their employer took place on Thursday, May 23, 2024. The 88 employees work as Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) at Genesis HealthCare.

“These workers fought an uphill battle to unionize and we’re proud to welcome them into our local,” President Daniel Ross, Jr., said. “We look forward to helping them accomplish their goals and secure a first contract with their employer.”

A Long Road to Unity

Workers at Genesis reached out to UFCW Local 152 in early 2023 after hearing positive feedback about the union from others in the healthcare industry. Specifically, these workers learned that the LPNs and RNs at Eagleview Rehabilitation (now Big Oak Rehabilitation), a neighboring healthcare facility just ten miles away, elected to join UFCW Local 152 in late 2022.

However, an aggressive campaign by the company — resulting in multiple charges filed against Genesis HealthCare — delayed the vote to unionize as the company’s actions were reviewed by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

After the NLRB determined that Genesis had indeed engaged in unfair labor practices, the board ordered the company to communicate clearly that the workers have the legal right to organize their workplace without fear or intimidation. The election was then able to move forward, resulting in the workers’ victory on May 23.

Looking Ahead

Local 152 will meet with the Genesis workers in the coming weeks to draft contract proposals and schedule bargaining dates with the company.

“These essential workers at Genesis HealthCare no longer have to settle for workplace grievances that go unheard,” President Ross said. “As members of Local 152, they will be treated with respect for the work they perform and empowered to seek the improvements they deserve.”

Congratulations to these 88 workers, especially those on the organizing committee! It was not easy to unite in the face of an anti-union campaign.

“No great achievement is possible without persistent work,” said Kim Wing, a CNA at Genesis Healthcare. “I must say, it was hard work getting people to come together as one, but we got it done! I think the union is the best decision we made. They are here to help 100% and are available to talk whenever we have concerns.”

Finally, congratulations to Director of Organizing Mike Thompson and organizers William Pitts, Ernest Dunmore, Carilisse Lopez, and Alley Snow for helping these members walk through the process of organizing.
