Earlier this year, the Irv R. String Local 152 Scholarship Fund opened for members and their dependents to apply for a college scholarship for the 2022-2023 academic year. After careful deliberation by the Scholarship Committee, award winners were selected. Congratulations to our ten award winners!
Gabriela Armijos is currently attending Montclair State University where she is majoring in Computer Science and possibly minoring in social work. She plans on becoming an engineer.
Gabriela volunteers for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer County.
Her father, Tehuhar Armijos, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Spring Point Senior Living at Meadow Lakes.
Emma Benson currently attends the University of Scranton where she is majoring in Occupational Therapy and considering a minor in Spanish. She plans to work in a pediatric setting to help as many children as possible reach their fullest potential.
Emma is currently a member of SOTA which is an occupational therapy-based club, Kindness for Chemo & Beading for Hope which are two similar clubs that make bracelets for sick children.
Her mother, Vicki Benson, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Acme Markets in Newtown, PA.
Elizabeth Buch is currently attending The College of New Jersey and is majoring in Early Childhood Deaf Education with a concentration in Sociology. She currently works for The College of New Jersey as a Community Advisor.
Elizabeth also volunteers at the Funny Farm Animal Rescue Sanctuary and also with TCNJ Deaf Hearing Connection Club.
Her father, Michael Buch, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Acme Markets in Seaville, NJ.
Sophia Fagan is a senior at Absegami High School in Galloway, NJ. She will be studying Speech Pathology/Communication Disorders at Rutgers University.
Sophia has been with the marching band throughout her time at Absegami and she is the Vice President of the Latin Honor Society, as well as a Varsity Distinguished Scholar. Throughout her time in high school, she has been in a dual credit program where she has obtained credits at Stockton and ACCC. She will walk with the ACCCs graduating class of 2022 to accept her associate degree.
Her mother, Roxanne Fagan, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May Court House, NJ.
Gianni Hernandez is currently a senior at Mastery High School in Camden, NJ. He will be attending Rutgers University-Camden where he plans to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
Gianni volunteers with the National Honors Society helping out those in need in the community and he is also part of the varsity volleyball team at his school.
His father, Jose Hernandez, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Barry Callebaut in Pennsauken, NJ.
Nicole Kramer is currently attending Stockton University and is in a Dual Degree Program and will receive her B.A/M.A. in Criminal Justice and Forensic Psychology with a minor is Business Accounting.
She plans to become a Forensic Accountant for the FBI. Nicole is currently participating in an internship with Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
Nicole is currently a UFCW Local 152 member at Village ShopRite in Marmora, NJ.
Maxene Modesto is currently a senior at Egg Harbor Township High School. She will be attending the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia where she plans to major in Neuroscience. She plans on becoming a Physician’s Assistant specializing in Oncology.
Maxene is part of the Key Club and has received the Varsity Scholar Award for the last 3 years.
Her mother, Dominique Modesto, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May Court House, NJ.
Stephen Steigerwalt is a senior at the Academy of the New Church Boys School. He will be attending Saint Joseph’s University where he plans to study Criminal Justice and possibly double majoring in Computer Science. He plans on obtaining a career in Federal Law Enforcement.
Stephen is part of the football and baseball teams at his school and also volunteers with the soccer club to help serve food and work in the kitchen.
His mother, Valerie Steigerwalt, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Acme Markets in Newtown, PA.
Emily Varner is currently a senior at Egg Harbor Township High School. She will be attending Rutgers University-New Brunswick where she plans to study Chemical Engineering with a focus on Pharmaceuticals.
Emily is part of the Interact Club, Chemistry League and the Key Club and has volunteered in several events such as Virtual Walk for Lupus, 21 Down Christmas Party, Thanksgiving Food Drive, Trunk or Treat, school clean ups and more.
Emily is a UFCW Local 152 member at Village Shop Rite of Somers Point.
is currently a senior at Pinelands Regional High School. She will be attending Thomas College where she plans on obtaining her Bachelor’s and Masters degree in accounting to become a Certified Public Accountant. She volunteers at the local Veterans Museum cataloging books and also at the local Ocean County Library.
Kayla is part of the National Honor Society and a Student Ambassador at her school and also a part of (FBLA) Future Business Leaders of America. She has also been on the varsity softball team for the last four years and is also part of the basketball team.
Her mother, Denise Weber, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Acme Markets in Beach Haven, NJ.
